The Founders included the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution partly to protect religious rights. It was intended to keep the Federal government from interfering in religious practices and to keep it from establishing a national religion. James Madison is often called the Father of the Constitution and is known to have been one of the greatest political theorists in history. In 1825 he said,
"The belief in a God, all powerful, wise, and good, [is] essential to the moral order of the world, and to the happiness of man."
