The Founders included the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution partly to protect religious rights. It was intended to keep the Federal government from interfering in religious practices and to keep it from establishing a national religion. The Constitution of Minnesota, dating from 1857, has in its Preamble:
"We, the people of the State of Minnesota, grateful to God for our civil and religious liberty, and desiring to perpetuate its blessings..."
Later, in Article 1, Section 16, it says:
"...The right of every man to worship God according to the dictates of his own conscience shall never be infringed;..."
