The Founders included the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution partly to protect religious rights. It was intended to keep the Federal government from interfering in religious practices and to keep it from establishing a national religion. The 14th President of the U.S., Franklin Pierce, said this is his inaugural address on March 4, 1853:
"It must be felt that there is no national security but in the nation's humble, acknowledged dependence upon God and His overruling providence."
